4 Easy Ways to Remain Committed to your New Year’s Resolutions
It's time for a check-in
- February 4, 2025

You took the time in December to write down a few New Year’s resolutions (visit “New Year’s Resolutions for Your Career” post here). About a month ago, you were ready to start the year off right. Empowered by energy and optimism, you wanted to change your ways and form new habits. But then life started happening, and maintaining those resolutions was harder than you thought.
It’s time to take another look and renew your excitement about the resolutions you set. Even if the demands from work or daily life have you concentrating on those near-term priorities, you can still get back on track with your New Year’s resolutions.
Here are 4 ways to help you get back to (or stick with) your resolutions:
1. Break Them Down
Ask yourself if you were thinking too big about your resolutions. Did time away from work during the holidays lead you to overestimate what was reasonable? See if you can break up your resolutions into smaller, more manageable parts. Instead of saying you’re going to meditate every day, how about once a week?
2. Buddy Up
Find someone to share your resolutions with who will also share their resolutions with you. Have a regular check in to encourage each other to stay committed.
3. Write It Out
Make a list or use an app to track how you’re doing. Make a game for yourself to stay on your resolution as long as you can. Maintaining your own streak can be very motivating!
4. Cheer Yourself On
When you hit a milestone, celebrate! Be kind to yourself and recognize when you’re making progress. This will help encourage you to keep pushing forward.
Sticking with your resolutions requires more than just your own good intentions. You’ll need to keep putting in the effort and getting support to make it work. With one or more of these approaches, you’ll be back on track to keeping your momentum, and you’ll soon be seeing the progress you were hoping for professionally and personally.
